Ethan Home ... First Year ... Ethan Goes to the Zoo

April 4 - We flew to the Bay Area for a visit today. Like the other times, he was a very good baby on the plane. Jeff weaseled us all into first class for the trip down, which was very nice, though a bit sneaky.
April 5 - We visited the San Francisco zoo today. It's changed a lot. Ethan liked it fine, but the truth is that at this point, he's as fascinated by things like buttons as he is by things like elephants.
Sunday we gardened at Mom's all day. Mom got Ethan a "learning drum." And Tony got him this extremely adorable Winnie the Pooh toy. Today I could have sworn he said, "I ate dirt." He also makes motorboat sounds all the time.
April 15 - Jeff's dad has arrived. It's pretty exciting that he'll be living out here. And it's really working out surprisingly well so far having 4 extra cats and a dog in the house. :)
April 17 - Ethan fell off the bed today. Oops. He cried, but seems OK, though I felt really bad. Jeff's out of town again, and Ann offered to come over during my meeting, but then Dan got home in time, so he watched him. Ethan loves the "Where's Ethan?" game. We cover his face with something and then look around saying, "Where's Ethan?" "Where is he?" Then sometimes I take it off and say "There he is! Let's tickle him!" and sometimes he takes it off himself. He giggles the whole time.
April 19 - Happy birthday, me. Jeff brought me coffee in bed and gave me a gorgeous massage. We put Ethan in his crib in his own room tonight, for the first time, because we'd folded up the co-sleeper and taken it to Dan's for the day. Ethan didn't seem to have any trouble going to sleep by himself. When he woke up we brought him into our bed for the rest of the night.
Jeff played the "Where's Ethan?" game with him today, just looking around the way we used to do it. Ethan laughed and laughed. There's nothing quite like making a baby giggle uncontrollably.
April 22 - He turned on the drum by himself today and started playing with it. It's actually not clear whether he prefers to hit the drum, or just mess with the buttons on the front.
More laughs today, as Jeff adopted a funny old-lady Wallace-and-Gromit kind of voice. Also, he went into the nursery and spoke to the baby monitor, leaving Ethan in the living room holding the receiver. Ethan loved it, especially since it was set on vibrate.
At dinner I gave him a big piece of cantaloupe to suck on. It was quite funny for a while, as he managed to bite it in half, and then he had a big piece in his mouth that kept coming out and then disappearing again. Then he choked and gagged quite dramatically, as he does with just about everything we give him to eat that's not baby food. He recovered, as he always does.
Ann and Zack got him a teething toy -- it's a duck with rubber feet that are good for babies to chew on. Ethan offered the duck feet to me, and we traded off chewing on them. He's really very generous.
