Christmas fun

So, Christmas. We had a good time, except for when all three of us got stomach flu. Ethan was least hard hit: he was only sick for about two hours, and didn't even seem unhappy in between. Jeff and I did not fare quite as well. Ethan even had a cute name for it -- he called it "spitting." As in, "I feel funny with spit," and "I don't want to spit anymore."

When Jeff and I were both sick at the same time, in different bathrooms, Ethan kind of went back and forth between the two of us. He sat and watched me for a while, and then he said, "Mama, you just waiting? You waiting to spit?"

Anyway, we got better. While we were recovering, Dave and Angie and Jeff's dad took Ethan to the aquarium with Nicholas. They didn't stay long, but Ethan apparently loved the jellyfish particularly. He said they went squish, squish.

Ethan loved being with everybody, and playing with Nicholas. He has come up with a marvelous name for Martha: he calls her "Grandmartha." I think it's rather perfect, actually, and my dad thinks it's adorable. Now that we're home again, he will have to get used to just boring old Mama and Daddy again.

Ready to go

I've finally got my blog all set up, so I can keep the entire world updated on what Ethan's up to. I will make older entries for posterity when I have the time.

Saturday, Kim (a childhood/high school friend) came to dinner with her husband Geron and their daughter Clara, who's 6 days younger than Ethan. They were in town from Santa Fe. Clara and Ethan played together really well. She's sooo cute, with all this fine red-gold hair, and long blond eyelashes. They visited us again a few days later, and we remembered to take pictures.

Yesterday Ethan drew a rather impressive concrete mixer truck.

Business trip

I just got back from 4 days and 3 nights without Ethan. We survived. Actually, he gave Jeff a pretty easy time – he fell asleep without nana no problem, and the first night actually didn’t wake up at all. Then he got a cold, so the next two nights he wasn’t as happy. I missed him, though. Monday night I didn’t manage to talk to him on the phone because they were at Karla’s when I called, and then when I caught Jeff, Ethan had just gone to sleep.

I pumped several times each day, but it was hard. Those all day meetings are tiring. Still, I was mostly OK. Tuesday night I talked briefly to Ethan and Jeff, in the aisles of Costco. Ethan told me they were at the store, buying lots of things, including a new book for him. Then I drove up to SF to have dessert with Naoko and Noelle – trying to take advantage of the good side of being there without Ethan.

Wednesday Jeff had emailed me a movie message from Ethan, which I played over and over. Since I don’t have an office down in Mountain View anymore, I was just checking email on Jason’s laptop, which was also the one we were projecting onto the screen for all to see. So everyone got to see my little movie of Ethan. Again and again.

That night when I called, Ethan was still singing "Happy Birthday" for Jeff. Karla and Jay had not only had them over for dinner, but had even gotten a cake for him. All the kids really liked it. Apparently Anna was saying, "Happy Birthday, Jeff!" every 45 seconds.
Jeff and Ethan met me inside the airport. As soon as Ethan saw me come through security, he broke away and started running toward me with this big grin, saying, “You came back!” Then I picked him up and he said, “I want some NANA!”
