Rockets!
A month or so ago at the park, Jeff ran into a family shooting off model rockets with their 4-year-old. This made him nostalgic, so he unearthed his and Dave's old model rockets from the basement, and they've been on the dining room table ever since. He also bought one new rocket for Ethan, and some new engines, and a few weeks ago they launched rockets for the first time.
Ethan was very excited. First they used an "A" engine, then a "B" engine, and finally a "C" engine. With the C engine, the rocket (Ethan's) went out of sight, then floated back down into a tree. The whole thing was observed by a gaggle of ten-year-old boys at Little League tryouts. They were apparently completely distracted by the rocket-launching, and counted down with Ethan. Jeff took a little movie of the countdown and launch, and after the launch there's a loud chorus of juvenile cheers from the audience. I think Ethan really enjoyed that. When the rocket got stuck in the tree, some of the boys tried to get it down by throwing things at it, to no avail. So Jeff and Ethan came home and got some long poles, then went back and got it, only slightly the worse for wear.
This weekend they went again, and Will and Anna came too. Anna pushed the button for the second rocket. Will found it a little scary because of the smoke, and didn't want to launch one. Afterwards, Anna said, "Jeff, I don't think the rockets are fun AT ALL," before running off to the playground.
