Montana bound

Ethan and Jeff left today for Montana. Jeff has a business trip a few hundred miles away from Bozeman, where his dad and Carolyn live, so he's dropping Ethan off there, and then they'll have the weekend all together. It will be Ethan's first time away from both of us - except for the night Linna was born, when Ethan stayed here with Martha. He's so excited, and has been counting down the days for over a week.

To prepare for the trip, Jeff bought some Magic Tree House books that he hasn't read - he got into those when he got some hand-me-downs from Tonia next door. Then a few more from the library. He's funny with library books right now - he's gotten really into short chapter books like the Magic Tree House books or "Andrew Lost". He reads them immediately once, and then again later. Yesterday Jeff went to the library to get some books for the trip, and he got a Roald Dahl one about a giant crocodile. Later he said to Ethan, "You should read that one!" and Ethan said, "Yeah, it's really funny! I read it before lunch."

New bike

On Wednesday I finally got Ethan a bike. We'd been outside with Will and Anna, and they were riding theirs, and I decided it was past time we got him one. We'd looked about a month ago, but the guy at the store said Ethan was a little big for the small size, but he was very uncomfortable on the large size, so we didn't get one. This time we went to the Bike Gallery on Division (we pass it every day on the way to school), and they guy there was much more helpful - he had Ethan try riding the smaller size, and suggested we get that one because the larger one would be hard for him to ride, and he'd be able to ride the smaller one for a while. So we just got one - and a helmet. (I told the guy he'd need an adult-sized helmet, but just like the guy at the other store, he had to start with the kid ones and see for himself. Sure enough, we walked away with an adult-sized helmet.)

So now Ethan is very excited about biking. Yesterday after Kaya went home, we went around the block. He fell once on the slant of the sidewalk, but was OK. Then coming back down Hawthorne there was a hill, and he started going way too fast, and panicked. I had Linna in the stroller so there wasn't much I could do. Fortunately he steered away from the street and just took a tumble into some pine needles. They were soft, so he wasn't hurt, but he did point out that he got some on his tongue. Anyway, we'll stick to the flat areas a little more, but he does really well with it overall.
