Fractions

Not really new news, but last week at dinner I was surprised anew by Ethan's math. We were having tamales (from Trader Joe's - yay for Trader Joe's when I'm doing the single mom thing). Ethan got two, and I shared one of my two with Linna. He started talking about how many we were each eating, and how I only had one and a half. I pointed out that I had salad too. He decided that salad was about equivalent to 3/4 a tamale (why? I don't know), and then immediately said that meant I had two and a quarter. I don't know that he could so quickly add fractions other than halves and quarters, but still, I was kinda impressed. Then he said, "So your tamales plus mine is 7 halves, which is the same as 3 and a half!" Um, yeah.

Update

Gosh, it's sure hard to update this with any regularity. Somehow it's easier to keep adding entries for Linna, since she changes so much in just a few weeks. Ethan is a little more slow-growing these days.

Back to school today after a vacation in Sunriver with the gang. Ethan had a pretty good time there, directing the building of four large snowmen (well, one large, one medium, one kid, and one baby). And Zack built a pretty awesome snow fort, with help from others. But the highlight for Ethan was a game they had at the house called "Take Off." Pretty fun, and right up Ethan's alley. He was happy enough to go back to school, but I'm starting to panic, because soon we have to figure out where to go for school NEXT year. First grade! Eek!

If I were to be frank, I would have to admit that Ethan is just a little bit challenging these days. Not all the time, but he definitely pushes on a lot of things, and then occasionally gets worked up and aggressive. We're still learning how to handle it, and we don't handle it the same way, either.

What else, what else... we took the bus and the Max to the downtown library yesterday (with Ann and Zack and Mika and Linna too). Ethan immediately succumbed to two Roald Dahl books (he LOVES them, with good reason), and another A to Z mystery. Even the fun of seeing Kaya today after two weeks without her was not enough to tear him away. He started The Hobbit when we were in Sunriver, but I don't know that he'll finish it anytime soon.
