August 1 - Today the baby almost clapped on beat. I was clapping, so he
started... and then he noticed that I wasn't clapping as often as he was, but
on the beat. So he tried it too.

August 2 - At pretty much the last minute, we decided to take a weekend at the
coast. I realized we haven't had any time away together -- except for visits to
family -- since our honeymoon. Ethan loved his
first encounter with sand. He thought it very curious at first, and
just couldn't seem to get over the way it fell through his fingers. He kept
trying to give me handfuls of it, most of which just ran through his hands
before it got to me. But it was a nice thought, I thought. He's very giving.

|
I took his pants off so they wouldn't get all sandy. I even walked him down to
the ocean to dip his feet in, but he kept wanting
to sit down in the wet sand, which I wasn't in favor of. Anyway, he was
endlessly amused just digging in the sand. We also used the
baby backpack some more. It works great, especially when Jeff wears it
instead of me.

August 6 - He made the sign for food! Well, not exactly, but he smacked his
hand into his mouth, and seems to do it reliably when he wants food. Also, he
pinched own nose when he had a stinky poop. When Jeff pinches his nose and
says, "Pee-yew!" Ethan pinches his, too. He likes "Itsy Bitsy Spider," and
after you sing it to him, he'll try to do the hand motions so you'll sing it
again.

August 8 - We all flew down to Oakland in the early morning. Mom and Erika
picked me up at the airport, then we shopped while Jeff went to work. They made
me buy this sexy designer dress that was way on sale at the Nordstrom Rack.
Really. They made me. I was really uncertain about wearing such a dress to a
wedding, but they insisted, and there was nothing I could do. We had
dinner at Higashi West to celebrate Erika's birthday. Ethan was a good
baby, as usual. He got miso soup, so he was happy about that.

August 9 - Naoko and Andy's wedding! It
was fun to play taiko at her
wedding. Can't have a wedding without the bride
playing some taiko in her wedding dress. It was also cool to see Cindy,
and there were lots of other babies there. I enjoyed seeing all the old Taiko
Dojo folks, especially Noelle. I think the PT folks were a little shocked by my
dress, except of course for Ann and Zack, who are familiar with my occasional
propensity to cleavage-showing fancy dresses.

I brought drawing paper for the kids' activity table at the reception. It was
very funny -- last week I was talking to Naoko on the phone about taiko stuff,
and I asked her if I could do anything else to help. She said, "No... yes! Can
I call you back in 10 minutes?"
|
|
Then ten minutes later when she called back, she said, "Hi! Um... what were we
talking about?" but eventually she remembered that she wanted to ask me to buy
drawing paper. I guess that's what happens when you're at the tail end of
planning a wedding. Anyway, Ethan liked
the activity table. He even drew. Kristy claims he wrote his name on
the table, but somehow I think it was KRISTY herself who did that.
|
 |
It was funny -- Ethan had lots of fans, since the PT people don't see him that
much, and the SF taiko folks hadn't met him before. So there he was at the
kids' table, surrounded by adults who
were taking up all the other kid-sized chairs. Occasionally another kid would
peer over, looking for a free seat. Seriously, of course the adults gave way,
but it was still funny.

August 10 - Nice relaxing day. Bagels in the morning, then house projects at
Mom's. Mom and Jeff and I bought a fan for upstairs, and Jeff installed it.
Then I had the brilliant idea that since it was fairly warm, we should let
Ethan splash around in one of the wading pools at Mom's house. We
hadn't brought his swimsuit or a swim diaper, so I just took all his clothes
off -- and he promptly peed on the patio floor. He really liked playing in the
pool, though. He didn't want to get out even though he was all chilled from the
cold water.
