December 20 - Ethan is four months old today. We flew down to San Jose for
Christmas, and Ethan was very good. When we checked our bags for the flight,
the guy at the desk checked our ID's, as usual. He'd just asked if I had the
same last name as Jeff, and then he noticed Ethan, whom I was carrying in the
Baby Bjorn. I could have sworn he said, "Oh, and I see you have a love child!"
I laughed and said, "Did you just say he was our love child?" and the poor guy
was quite flustered -- "No, no, I said LAP child!" (Meaning a child that is
young enough to travel on my lap, rather than requiring his own seat.) Anyway,
it was funny.

We've got a great setup at Mom's. We use the co-sleeper from Cynthia, and an
old changing table that's been in Gammi's basement forever. There's even a
rocking chair in Erika's
old room, for me to nurse him in.
December 22 - Today was the annual pizza party at Tony's, which was quite
yummy. On the way back to Mom's, Jeff and I went shopping -- oh, the horror.

Yesterday we went to the movies -- Tony and Mom had gotten us tickets to "The
Two Towers" ahead of time, and offered to babysit so we could actually go see
it. It was great -- a great Christmas present. When the movie ended, though, I
was so anxious to get home and make sure everything was OK. Not that I didn't
trust Mom -- far from it. I was more worried for her, that Ethan might have
been fussy the whole time. But she said he was great, and took the bottle with
no problem.

December 23 - I went to work for a few hours, leaving the baby with Mom. Later,
I drove to get Jeff and then to Pleasanton to have dinner with Jeff's
Uncle Alan and Aunt Barbara.

December 24 - Jeff's Aunt Diana met
us at Erika's house in Campbell. We sat and chatted for a while. After she
left, we helped cook dinner for all (including Mom, Gammi, Tony,
Dad): Jeff roasted pork loin, stuffed with apricots and apples and
such. None of the rest of us cooking had much experience cooking pork, so Jeff
was in charge, and it was delicious.

December 25 - Christmas! We had Eggs Benedict for breakfast, of course, with
Mom's famous homemade English muffins. Mom held him while she opened her
presents, and he just watched curiously.
There was a huge mound of stuff for us and
Ethan. If he'd had the slightest idea what it was all about, he might
have really been excited. Actually, we had to rush to get everything opened in
time to leave for Christmas dinner in Alamo. Naturally,
everyone there was excited to meet
Ethan. He was so good, and let lots of people hold him. He also
took a nap while we were there. During our traditional post-dinner
walk, Erika carried him in the Baby Bjorn -- I say, better her than me.

The day after Christmas we drove to Carmel
Valley to see Jeff's dad, Dave, Angie, and Nicholas. It was great to
see everyone and exchange presents and all.
Nicholas and Ethan are closer in size now -- Ethan doesn't seem so much
like a micro-baby. We had a nice, mellow day. I got lots of time to chat with
Angie, and we took the babies on a walk, which zonked Nicholas out.
|
|
The most entertaining part of the day was after dinner, when Angie and I
decided it would be fun to bathe the babies together. We filled the tub, got
'em naked, and plopped them down. For a few minutes it was fine, but then
Angie, um, made a comment that Nicholas took exception to, and he started
screaming. Ethan was so startled by this that he started screaming too. So
there we were, stuck in a tiny bathroom with two wet, naked, screaming babies.
They even started screaming in unison, which was impressive.

December 28 - We went to Gammi's
for one last visit before we left, and had a nice lunch. And then home again,
home again. At the airport, I left Ethan in the carseat and put him on the
thing that weighs the baggage, to see how much he weighs. The scale said 30
pounds, which at first I thought meant Ethan was 23 pounds, far heavier than I
had thought! But then I remembered that we'd had to bring the base for the
carseat with us, which added 5 pounds -- so he was really only 18.

It's nice to be home.
