Jeff discovered a weird trick he can play with his camera, messing with the
exposure. He had fun making Ethan look very
angelic. He took tons of pictures of the cat that way, too.

September 23 - Jeff is gone for the first time this week, down in San Leandro
for a class. Ethan and I went on a very long walk today with the stroller, up
to Mount Tabor and back. Hard work pushing that stroller up the hill. I was
sore after... guess I ought to exercise more.

Tuesday we had to visit the pediatrician again, to get his second PKU test. Not
a very fun experience, as we had to wait a long time, and then of course he
cried. The only fun part was finding out that the little snorty pig now weighs
12 pounds. That's still an average of a pound a week -- I hope he slows down
soon! Then again, I guess it's a good way to get my arm muscles back.

Ann, Zack, and Naoko have been taking very good care of me, bringing me food.
It was especially fun to watch Naoko calm Ethan down, as he was very fussy when
she was here. She kind of bounced around with him in her arms, describing
various objects to him in a silly way. He'd calm down and stare at whatever it
was (a chair, the chandelier, the light), and then start up again, so she'd
move on to something else.

September 28 - Today Ethan's new trick while
lying in the crib was to hit two of the animals on the mobile at once,
with both hands. He seemed to really enjoy it, and indeed I think it's quite
clever. Jeff and I marked and cut the tile for the bit of kitchen floor today,
which was pretty good fun. Tomorrow we'll set it in place. Tonight Linda and
Bill Thornton hosted a baby shower for us. One of the gifts was a
baby sling, which is great.

It's really fall now, thank goodness. The weather is fresh and cool, with some
rain, and some sun. I love it. We had a nice morning at a nearby cafe, drinking
coffee and reading magazines while Ethan just stared at everything. I read the
Utne Reader, which I really enjoyed, especially since there were several
mentions of Portland organizations in it. Hooray, Portland. It did make me
think, in a very cliched way, about what the world will be like when Ethan's
all grown up. Trite but true, that having a kid makes one more motivated to
make the world a better place.

Ethan has started sleeping 4 or 5 hours at a stretch during the night, so I
feel way better, even with Jeff gone. It sure is nice when Jeff is here,
though. I don't usually make him get up in the middle of the night, but he
often takes Ethan in the morning, around 7, if he won't go back to sleep after
eating. Oh, it's so nice. And sometimes of course
he feeds Ethan, so that Ethan won't refuse the bottle later. Though I
have to admit, sometimes it's nice having the whole bed for just me and Ethan.
(Usually he sleeps in his co-sleeper beside the bed, but sometimes he joins me
in the bed.) We have got to get a new bed, a bigger one.
