March 3 - Today instead of cereal and baby food, we tried mushed-up avocados.
He hated 'em. It's terrible, but he looks awfully cute when he's making
disgusted faces. He kind of scrunches up his eyes, and shakes his head back and
forth. Icky!

We have a fun new game, in which I take his hands, and he pulls himself to
sitting and then to standing. Then I let go (we do this on the bed), and he
falls down and giggles.

March 8 - Today was rainy, but Jeff rented a
cement saw and attacked the backyard. He made beautifully straight cuts
in three of the big squares of cement near the wall. Then I helped him break it
up (with a sledgehammer, very satisfying), and we stacked it up in a big wall
near the kitchen window. The cats find it handy for coming in and out of the
window, so they can leave their little muddy footprints on the windowsill.

Ethan handed Jeff one of the little stuffed birds from his birdhouse. I think
he's very clever.

March 9 - Jeff and I had a really nice walk around the neighborhood, after
working on taxes for a while. It got sunny, and we stopped in to see Lori
briefly, then decided to just stay out, so we put Ethan in the stroller and
started off. It drizzled slightly, but was still pleasant. We just wandered
slowly, looking at various porch railings and front gardens.

March 13 - Ethan's 6 month (closer to 7) appointment with the pediatrician
today. I'm not too sure about her anymore. She's nice and all, but she seems to
have no interest in finding out about our parenting values and philosophy...
which isn't necessarily bad, except that she made some disparaging comments
about other mothers that I took exception to. I asked if I could
breastfeed Ethan during his shots this time, as I'd heard it can help with the
pain. She said no, and that's fine... but then she made a comment about a
mother she saw recently who was breastfeeding her two-year-old: "How weird is
that?" I just said something about how it's considered weird in this country,
and left it at that. I don't know if I'll still be nursing Ethan when he's 2,
but I might be. Anyway, we might look around for someone else. The pediatrician
we saw at the hospital seemed more progressive, and more interested in finding
out what our philosophy was than in pushing hers on us.

March 17 - He's definitely rolling from his back to either side, almost onto
his tummy except that one arm is still underneath him. A few days ago he rolled
from his front to his back. So hooray! He likes to play, and has discovered how
to uncover my boob while he's sitting next to me and I'm lying down. He thinks
boobs are very amusing, or at least pleasing -- it makes him smile to discover
one. Once he pulled my bra aside, smiled, and then grabbed my nipple and
squirted himself in the face. I couldn't help but laugh.

March 18 - Today I put him on his tummy for a while, and he seemed to be trying
to move towards his Tigger toy. He talks a lot, though I'm hard pressed to
figure out exactly what he's saying. Also, today he held a big glass by
himself, and drank. I had my hand there just in case he decided to fling it to
the floor. I guess it's time for a real plastic cup for him!

March 22 - Great day today. We did some digging, planted herbs and a lavender
in the corner curvy bed at the top of the stairs out back. We went to Portland
Nursery and wandered around, which is always fun. Mom wanted us to buy a plant
for ourselves (from her) for our anniversary, so we bought two clematis for the
front porch, and also three kinds of blueberries.

I think I'm getting the hang of weekends in a way I'd forgotten about. The
weekend comes, and because I feel good about the work I've done during the
week, I really forget totally about work and just enjoy the time off. Of
course, we often do lots of work around the house on weekends, but that's OK.

I think Jeff needs to get out of the house more. This last month I've been gone
so much for taiko, and he's stayed home with the baby. The stay-at-home dad.
We've been rehearsing Monday and Friday, and also early on Thursday, one
Wednesday, and once even a Saturday, trying to get ready for the CD recording.
Jeff has been great.

March 23 - Happy 1st anniversary, us. We had a nice day gardening (despite rain
and hail), and then dropped Ethan off with Karla and Jay, and went out to
dinner. We talked about our marriage, what's been unexpected, what's been
really nice, what we might hope for. And no, I'm not telling.

|
Ethan stood up by himself, hanging on
to the exersaucer. So cute!
|
|
March 26 - He has a tooth! It showed up unexpectedly -- he wasn't particularly
fussy or anything. I guess he's being a good sport about it. I could feel the
tooth with my finger, just poking through.
|
|
March 27 - Today was the longest day of the CD recording for me. I was gone in
the morning, rushed home to feed the baby, and then went back all afternoon.
Jeff and Ethan came to watch in the evening, so I fed him again then, and then
we worked until about 10:30 that night. Phew! It's a whole lot of sitting
around, and just a little actual playing, since the setup for each song takes a
lot of time.

|
And Ethan has another tooth!
|
|
March 31 - Today I gave Ethan his first haircut. His hair had gotten really
long on top, sort of flippy by his ears, and is just short and fuzzy on the
back of his head. So he looked pretty funny. His head was kind of a moving
target during the haircut, but that's just the way it is. I think he looks good
now, or at least slightly less crazy.
