May 2 - Too funny -- Jeff gave Ethan a raisin yesterday, which he swallowed
without mishap. And today it showed up in his diaper, whole, along with a big
piece of carrot. Carrots are great -- we give him a big piece of carrot, and it
entertains him for quite some time.

Jeff often takes the little filter out of Ethan's sippy cup, so he can just tip
it, and not have to suck to get water. This morning I gave it to Ethan while he
was in his chair, and he found a new pasttime: leaning over the side of the
chair and dripping water onto the wall and floor. I didn't discover his
nefarious plot until it was too late, and I had to get a towel. Also, he ate
about half of a scone this morning, with no back-pounding required. I think
he's getting the hang of chewing. Now he's sitting on the floor in his usual
spot, but I just had to go stop him from pulling all the UPS mailers off of the
shelf behind his pillow. Little troublemaker. And he can't even crawl yet!

May 4 - He kind of waved today! He ate a graham cracker at Grandpa's. He loves
to bounce now, in his exersaucer. If you bounce up and down and say, "Bounce,
bounce, bounce!", he'll do it next and laugh.

I said "moo" because he was playing with the cow in his book, and he turned
straightaway and reached for his cow plushie. Clever boy!

May 8 - Besides playing the head-shaking game, today he started taking turns
with eye-squinching. He especially liked doing it with Jeff during dinner -- we
gave him peas, boiled and mashed up somewhat. He liked eating them with his
fingers. Then after dinner we sat him down with his "Happy Stacker" from Tony
-- he really likes it now, especially the center ball shaker. Just over the
course of the half hour he played with it, he started putting the ball in the
base, where it goes when they all stack up. He had a hard time letting go of it
at first, because he likes it so much, but then he started rolling it in, and
taking it out. He also seems to like handing it to me. Once he even took my
hand, and then used his other hand to put the ball in my hand. Another recent
trick is to scoot backwards. He's particularly fond of doing this in the living
room, just scooting along until he's stuck under the futon with only his head
sticking out.

May 11 - My first Mother's day. Sadly, Jeff had to leave town this morning. But
I had brunch at Ann and Zack's with Zack's great-grandmother, and then went on
a garden tour with Dan out in Beaverton. Yesterday we went to the
rhododendron garden (Jeff too) and even bought two rhodies... which we
now have to put somewhere.

It's a little hard with Jeff gone. Monday I took Ethan with me to practice, and
he was very, very good. He just sat there the whole time with earplugs in,
playing with his birds and his carrot. When we were leaving, he most definitely
waved at Teresa and again at Rachel -- a first.

May 13 - Today we sat outside in the back yard and had a picnic. Ethan ate some
bread from my sandwich, and then I got him a calendula flower to try to
distract him from pulling up the grass and moss. He liked the flower, and
gradually pulled it apart. He also handed it to me a few times. Then he went
back to the moss. I did lots of gardening today -- put in the tomatoes and
cucumbers and other things.

May 16 - Jeff came home in the morning. Ethan demonstrated his wave, which made
both of us a little teary 'cause it's so darned cute.

The next day we slept late. We did some gardening, but it was rainy and cold.
Jeff got stir-crazy, so we packed up and stopped by Janice and Tom's to return
clothes. Ethan and Joshua got a ride around in Joshua's wagon, but it was short
because Ethan tipped backwards and started to cry. He was definitely teething
today -- his top two teeth are about to poke through. Looks painful, and he's
not being quite as good a sport about it this time, not that I blame him.

May 18 - Zack came over to babysit so Jeff and Jeff's dad and I could all go to
see Kristy in Carmina Burana. It was most excellent. Zack seemed to be fine
babysitting -- Ann was busy, though she came over to help him before we got
home.
