Ethan Home ... First Year ... Valentine's Day

I left him with Karla and Jay one Thursday when Jeff was gone, so I could go to taiko. They said he was very good. It was a little bit hard leaving him... I knew they'd take good care of him, but I hoped he'd take good care of them. Jeff came home from the airport while I was at taiko, so he went and picked up Ethan. I guess Anna and Ethan kind of had a date, holding hands and everything.
February 10 - Jeff got Ethan a Valentine balloon from Fred Meyer. We were shopping, and when Jeff showed Ethan a balloon, he was just fascinated. So Jeff showed him all the different balloons floating around the store, and we decided he liked a shiny red heart balloon the best. It makes a great toy for him -- he jerks the ribbon and watches it bounce and is mightily amused.
February 13 - We finally had the appointment with the flat head doctor. By now we aren't worried anymore anwyay, since the campaign to round out his head has started to make a difference. I felt a little silly even taking such a healthy, active kid to the childrens' hospital. And sure enough, the specialist (plus a resident and an intern, since it's a teaching hospital) said his head would be fine. But he got weighed again (19 pounds), and got a full physical. The nurse who did the physical had a hard time because he was so active. To check his eyes, she shone a light in them and moved it around... but he was fascinated with the cord for the light and tracked that instead. She also said he had good object permanence already, since when she looped the cord up, he kept looking for it.
February 16 - He has some new tricks: he can finally pull his bug toy down by himself. When he's lying on his back, he arches back and can almost roll over. He did roll from front to back once, but hasn't repeated it. He makes new sounds -- ah boo-lah boo-lah, dei-n-da.
February 17 - Erika arrived for a visit. Jeff is gone all week, but that's OK! It's fun to have sister time. Erika came with me to Ensemble practice today. Ethan was good at practice, but somehow we forgot to bring the diaper bag, and of course he peed everywhere. So Erika ran to New Seasons and got some disposables.
February 20 - Ethan's 6 months old! He likes a game Jeff plays with him, where Jeff looks away from him, and then looks right at him suddenly. Ethan thinks it's hilarious. It's great how easily amused he is right now.
February 22 - Today we hiked to Multnomah Falls. Jeff and Erika took turns carrying Ethan in the Baby Bjorn. There were a surprising number of babies on the trail with their parents... but the smart parents all had baby backpacks. Must get one.
February 24 - He's definitely making the milk sign now, which is exciting. I thought he might have been doing it earlier, but it wasn't absolutely clear... but today he looked right at me, turned slightly on his side, reached up with his fist and made the sign. He also is making a new growly "Ehhhh" sound.
February 25 - Tonight PT had a show at the state prison. It took us so long to get cleared and get all our equipment down that we had to cut the show in half so the inmates would have time to eat dinner after. We got to mingle some with them during dinner, too. I was glad to be sitting with Annie, because she has no qualms about asking interesting and personal questions, so it was very interesting. Ethan was home with Dan and Jeff, and Ethan started playing the game of not looking at something, then looking at it. He shakes his head back and forth quickly, and then looks at Dan and laughs. Also, he seems to know that when he's reading something, be it one of his books, or a magazine, or a menu, or whatever, he ought to make sounds. So he babbles. It's cute.
February 27 - Tonight we baby-sat the twins. Quite an adventure! They were fine for an hour or so, but then Will started screaming. We passed him back and forth, with the other one taking Anna, who was only mildly upset. Both were incredibly sleepy, but probably didn't like being in a strange place. After about 20 minutes of that, I managed to sing Anna to sleep with the lullaby Naoko taught me months ago.
Since it worked so well for her, I took Will next, and sang him to sleep too. So when Karla and Jay arrived 5 minutes later, they were lying on the blanket, zonked out and angelic.
