Not to point fingers...

... but Linna's pointing hers. She points at everything now. She likes to point and say, "A-da!" Who knows what it means, but it's awfully cute.

We had a good trip down in CA for Thanksgiving. Linna finally got to meet her cousin Ginger (as did we), who is very cute and almost as big as Linna. At the end of our stay in Carmel Valley, we drove to the beach and then had lunch at Il Fornaio in Carmel. Ethan had a pepperoni pizza, and Linna sat in a high chair nibbling on bread. Then Ethan spilled a little water, so Jeff and I were both helping him... when we looked back at Linna, she had a piece of Ethan's pizza in her hand, and was looking very pleased with herself. I don't think she actually ate any, but she might have licked it. Well, no big deal.

Tired

Last night was the granddaddy of all awful nights with Linna. First of all, we're all sick. I'm in the snotty-headachy end of a rotten cold, Jeff's at the beginning of it, and Ethan and Linna theoretically just got over it. I got home late from the last Nursing Mother's Counsel training, and Jeff was exhausted, with Linna still awake. I tried for about 4 hours to get her to sleep, and she just wouldn't fall asleep. Then she had a freak diaper accident that resulted in pee all over her and the bed. New outfit number one. After that she quieted down for a while, but kept waking and wanting to nurse. Finally Jeff took her for a while and noticed that she smelled funny... I'd missed it because I'm so stuffed up. Sure enough, she'd pooped too. So I changed her again and we tried some more... no dice. I took her out of the bed and rocked with her in the chair, and she almost fell asleep a few times... but then she suddenly spit up. I was carrying her down the hall to get a new outfit when a great fountain of milk came splashing out, covering me, her, and the floor. At least it didn't hit the wall. I suppose nursing nonstop for hours is not such a good idea... especially after she had a 4-oz bottle of pumped milk while I was gone. Anyway, that calmed her down enough that we actually got a few hours of almost-sleep. But let's just say that none of us are particularly well-rested today.

Breaking news

She's officially got two words now - "Mama" and "Dob!" (dog). She's fairly reliable with both of them. And she signs for milk. This morning she did the "more" sign for the first time.

At bedtime we've been reading the "Whoozit Goodnight Book," with her little Whoozit nearby. She loves it and gets very excited when we start talking about it. She might also say, "Buh" for book but I'm not totally convinced about that one yet.

She and her friend Estella (who comes over once or twice a week for a few hours, and Mya watches them both) get along well. They're very cute together and like to hold hands. I suppose if we let them, they'd crawl all over each other. Estella is a few months younger, but is actually bigger, with these gigantic hands and feet.

Linna is officially 10 months old today!

She is astonishingly adorable, really.

Teeth at last

As usual, this is old news now. A few weeks ago Linna's first wee tooth finally poked through - just one sharp corner. Finally! Toothless until 9 months. Now the second one has also poked through, and the first has both corners so it's not quite as lethal. We're definitely past the days of putting our knuckles in her mouth, though. Jeff did it without thinking last night, and he was sorry.

We've discovered that she definitely knows the word "dog." If you say dog, she'll look right at Teddy. She also knows "nana" for nursing. I was doing the milk sign, and I asked her if she wanted milk. No response. Then I asked if she wanted nana milk, and she crawled over and helped herself. I think she even said it one time when she wanted it. And I think she's now saying "mama" intentionally too.

Oh yes, she's crawling now. She travels everywhere. She loves to crawl into the little flower house (a fabric house that fits over a card table, made by Jeff's aunt Diana in his childhood) and play with her bead toy. The only downside is that now she can get into Ethan's things. That means we have to be super careful to clean up after all his favorite games - like Monopoly. Lots of little chokey pieces in that. And we have to watch her carefully and child-proof as much as we can, because she finds all the coins on the floor immediately. She does put things in her mouth, but it's not as instant as it used to be, so we've been OK so far. Anyway, Ethan doesn't always like it now that she can mess with his stuff, and he keeps saying, "NO, Linna! Don't eat the !" I'm trying to get him to ask nicely instead of talking to her like she's Teddy.

She was completely screwed up by the time change. She's just started napping and sleeping well again now, after a week.

Last night I gave her some rice (Ethan and I made Polka-Dot Rice from his Salad People cookbook), and she got sticky all over. I don't think she actually ate much of it, but it kept her entertained.
