Bubba

Just came back from a work conference at Disney World, which I dragged the whole family to. I have lots to report about the experience, which was fun in general, but really brought home that I find Disney creepy. Little girls made over as princesses, complete with gowns and sparkly makeup and tiaras, scare me a lot.

But more on that later, with pictures (none of Linna in a tiara).

I keep forgetting to report that Linna has a new name for Ethan instead of "the-the" - she calls him "Bubba." I think it's hilarious. It seems to come from "brother," or at least that's what we assume.

Ya-ya

As I've mentioned before, Ethan has some Star Wars action figures. I'm extremely ambivalent about the whole thing - on the one hand, it's cute that he's so interested, but on the other hand, he's a little young to be so into something with the word "wars" in the title. And all the accompanying violence. I was 6 when the first movie came out, and it was pretty scary. He can't actually watch the movies, though we've gone through pieces of some - no hand-chopping or belly-slicing or sand-pit monsters.

Anyway, Linna has also become quite attached, especially to Yoda. A few days ago that was her new word - she calls him "Yaya." What's funny is that the next day, she started calling Kaya "Yaya" also. It's not that she thinks they're the same, it's just that the way she says them is the same. Like "planet" and "baby," both of which she pronounces "bebe." We first discovered this after Ethan's party, at which all the kids got space tattoos. Linna had a planet on her arm. We kept saying, "planet," and she'd say: "bebe."
"Plaaaa-net."
"Beeee-be."

Last night after we got back from dinner (Pho Van, always a hit, with Ethan downing a whole bowl of pho, and Linna slurping up rice noodles, rice, shrimp, pork, bean sprouts... everything), Linna took off down the sidewalk, saying "Wa? Wa?" Meaning that she wanted to go for a walk. So we walked most of the way down the block. When she got to a crack, she'd say "Dum!" which means jump. She can't jump yet, but she tries. Then she tripped and fell, scraping up her knee a little bit. Later that night she was still saying "Owwww" about her knee, so I asked if I should wash it. "Yeah," she said in her cute little I'm-so-sad voice. So I washed it an put a band-aid on.

Smash kiss and the dark side

Last night Mandy was with me while I was trying to get Linna to sleep - Ethan and Jeff were off at Target, buying up Stars Wars toys (sigh). Linna was completely distracted by Mandy. Rather than lying quietly and nursing, she kept wanting to kiss Mandy. Sounds pretty precious, I know, but the actual act was something Mandy called a "smash kiss" - Linna would dive at Mandy's face and press her nose and lips up against her. She usually tries to kiss on the mouth, which can be a little slimy. Still, it was pretty cute.

Linna's got lots of little games she likes to play. When I was nursing today, she kept popping off with this sly little grin and whispering... something. Then she'd giggle. Ethan decided it was funny, too, which of course just spurred her on.

She also REALLY likes Ethan's new Star Wars action figures. She's especially partial to Darth Vader. This morning they all watched us have breakfast, and when Linna was done, she wanted a "duy" (guy). Jeff picked up Luke and said, "This one?"
"No."
Then Obi-wan: "This one?"
"Nooooo."
And then Darth Vader: "This one?"
"Yeah!"
